Amazon Basin, Peru (1 week)
We will be returning again to the Amazon Basin in cooperation with our gracious and well organized host D.B. Peru. From Iquitos, the largest city in the world that can only be accessed by air or water, you travel by boat down the Amazon River to an Ecolodge. Every day you will travel by boat to a different village. You must have an adventurous spirit to be on this trip but guaranteed it will be a memorable one.
Lima, Peru (1 week)
We return for the second year to deliver care for the needy in some of the poorest barrios in the capital of Lima. This is a trip of contrasts. Work with the poor but stay overnight in the very cosmopolitan district of Miraflores. If comfort after clinic is a major concern for you, this is a perfect trip.
Sacred Valley, Peru (1 week)
On this trip you must be prepared to cope with altitude issues as it is a visit to the peaks of the Andes Mountains. This is the previous stomping grounds of the Incans. You drive to the Sacred Valley after flying into Cusco. After the dental commitment you will be able to go see one of the wonders of the world Machu Pichu. Maybe even dine on guinea pig.
Jalapa, Guatemala (1 week)
Jalapa is a great destination for first time volunteers. It is extremely well organized and hosted by Wells of Hope. We have sent teams to this part of Guatemala annually for over five years.
Chisec, Guatemala (1 week)
Chisec is a small town in Northern Guatemala that suffered the ravages of the Guatemalan civil war. The need for dental care is overwhelming. You must be committed to a hectic daily schedule if you volunteer for this trip. We will be flying into and out of Flores, home of the Tikal Mayan Ruins.
Kalimpong, India (2 weeks)
The town of Kalimpong is in the Darjeeling District of India surrounded by the Himalayas. A small group of volunteers will provide care at the Centre for Mountain Dynamics helping impoverished refugees from Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan.
Our accommodations will be at a Tibetan family-run orchid farm. The group is led by Dr. Anna Wang who has been in this location several times before. Meals will be mostly vegetarian.
Cambodia (2 weeks)
Cambodia is a perennial favourite destination for our volunteers. A couple of days at the end of the trip are spent in Siem Riep visiting the ruins at Angkor Wat.
Tibetan Frontier (3 weeks)
We are sending a team to this location for the first time in June 2015. They will report back to KIA and if the trip is a success there is a possibility we will offer another in June of 2016. If you are interested in this trip, please enter it as your third choice on the Destination Preference form by writing "Tibet (if possible)" This trip is almost a three week trip.
Cotacachi, Ecuador (1 week)
This trip will have a high level of comfort for the team involved and will be providing care for the indigenous people in the surrounding communities. Our sponsor remains the same as past trips to Tena. Cotacachi is a city located in the Imbabura province of Ecuador. It lies in a valley at the base of two dormant volcanoes and is just five miles from the famous market town of Otavalo. It has the highest concentration of indigenous people in the country so the need is great.
Philippines (2 weeks)
We hope to return to the Philippines, this time to the Islands of Layte and Samar. These regions were devasted by Typhoon Yolanda in November 2013. The people are still attempting to reconstruct, and are in dire need of dental treatment.
Haiti (1 week)
A trip for the more adventurous volunteer . We will be returning to Haiti led by Veteran leader Jo Marple. The clinic will be set up in Cite Soleil, a district of Port au Prince.
Belize (1 week)
This trip was originally scheduled for November but had to be moved because of bureaucratic concerns. Our sponsor is the Rotary Club and we will be going to Hopkins, a small town on the Caribbean coast. Unfortunately the cost rose a bit from the original estimate because of travel during the high season. This is a first time destination.
Ethiopia (2 weeks)
This is a first time journey to Ethiopia for KIA partnering with the charity Hope Ethiopia. The clinic will be in a remote rural area two hours from the capital Addis Ababa, in a town that Hope Ethiopa has deep ties to called Harbu Chulule. Because of cultural concerns, this group will be asked to refrain from smoking and alcohol. Hope Ethiopia has constructed a volunteer house for accommodations and a health center to work from. Previously, several eye surgery teams and small dental teams have been sent here but nothing on the scale of KIA.
